Dr. Mackey, Professor and Chair of the Department of Linguistics at Georgetown University, is a leading expert in cognitive and interactional processes and the design of learning effectiveness studies.
Her research has been featured in top scholarly journals, and she has authored 20 books and hundreds of chapters and articles. Notable works include The Bilingual Edge: Why, When and How to Teach Your Child a Second Language (HarperCollins), The Art and Science of Language Teaching (Cambridge), and Child’s Play (Benjamins).
A celebrated instructor, Professor Mackey has taught at programs around the world, consulted for major EdTech companies and schools, and reviewed international baccalaureate and language programs worldwide. Google scholar shows she is the most highly cited woman in the world in the research area of applied linguistics. She has spent the last ten years as Editor-in-Chief of the influential international journal the Annual Review of Applied Linguistics (published by Cambridge).
Professor Mackey’s research and teaching have won her five major professional awards: the Modern Language Association’s Kenneth W. Mildenburger prize, the International Task-Based Language Teaching and Learning Association’s Distinguished Achievement award, the American Association of Applied Linguistics’ Distinguished Scholarship and Service Award, Georgetown’s Presidential Scholar-Teacher award and Georgetown’s Provost’s Career Research award.
Her graduate work was at the University of Sydney and Cambridge University, where she earned her PhD and MPhil, respectively. She has advised Age of Learning for six years.
